My husband and I are thinking about relocating, and Portland is one of the places we would like to consider. Anyone live there? Do you have any pros or cons to share with us? How's the economy? Housing? Talk me into this, Portland people! :)

I don't live in Portland Melissa, but I do live in the Pacific Northwest and I say "Go for it".  As long as grey skies don't get you down there are a lot of great things to see and do in this area. I have visited Portland a number of times and it is a great city.  I know that Noell and Izzy went there this summer and they really liked it.

Hope someone living there replies and gives you more insight to help you with your decision.

Thank you, Maplestock. I've heard Portland is awesome, and I've visited once. I've always wanted to live in the Pacific Northwest, so that's why we're considering it.

If Trinity weren't in such a great ballet school here, we probably would be moving to Portland now. It's still a strong possibility for 3-5 years from now. Seriously amazing.

We'd move downtown, sell both cars, and walk/transit everywhere. :)

I used to live in Washington and visited Portland a few times. It has a great commuter train system, can be very beautiful when it isn't raining and has some more liberal politics than Alaska. There are also great outdoor activities and some tech companies have moved there, creating some job opportunities. It is also great wine country. Many of the rural communities are more conservative than Portland. There are also a wide variety of 2 and 4 year colleges if you ever need to seek those opportunities.

Izzy, that sounds like a great plan. My husband just lost his job, and we're trying to look at it as an opportunity to consider all kinds of possibilities. Who knows? Maybe we'll both be Portlanders someday!  :)

Thank you for all that information! It's becoming more and more appealing a choice for relocation. :)

Well, I may not be any help, but I wanted to jump on the Pacific North West bandwagon! It is our plan to move there (though WA), THE MINUTE our house sells, lol. Ok, well we might have to wait two minutes, lol.

Good Luck!!

Where in Washington are you planning to move, Robin?

Good luck on selling your house. We may be in the same boat eventually.

That is what I've heard, Ingunn. I've been to visit a couple times and loved it. The clincher would be my husband getting offered a job in that area, so fingers crossed!

Well, we are hopeful to move to the San Juan Islands, off the coast of WA actually! But we'll see. Property is expensive there  :(

I spent my high school years on Whidbey Island. We weren't near the water, but it was still very nice. Good luck with San Juans.

@Robin San Juan Islands would be Nirvana! We'd be neighbours! I've boated a bit around the islands. And I live on VI so I understand the draw. There are no extremes in the PNW. You don't have to hide indoors at any time of the year. Love!

Sounds like the place for me. Now, we just need to get my hubs a job there! :D

You will still wish to have transportation to discover the beauty of the environment outside of the city. So that means you will keep the motorcycle?

Maybe, but more likely we'll use Uber or something. :)
