Posted by aliedwards on 02 July 2014 - 09:02 AM

Hey guys! Yes, so many changes happening in this industry. This change has actually been in the works for awhile and just happens to be becoming public when all these other changes are happening too. I'm excited about what's to come :).

#222 5 Tips On Using These Forums...

Posted by Izzy on 27 June 2014 - 01:11 PM

Just thought I'd share a few tips that might help you get more out of these forums:

* Flesh out your profile. Add an image. Add some details about yourself. This helps other users connect with you and increases the likelihood of people responding to your posts. You can access your profile by clicking on your username in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

* When you see a forum that you're interested in, click "Follow this forum". Once you do this, you'll receive emails when there are new posts in that forum. You can also do this for individual Topics/threads. By the way, you can adjust your notifications by (once again) clicking on your username in the upper right-hand corner of the screen, then click on "Settings", then "Notifications".

* Click the "Like this" button on posts liberally. This gives other people positive feedback (which means they might post more awesome stuff for you).

* Post and comment in the gallery. This is an exciting part of the site, and you might want to take a peek at what's there.

* Lurking is totally cool (Hey, we all do it!), but don't be afraid to jump in and ask/answer questions when you're ready.

Just some thoughts. If you have more suggestions for getting more out of these forums, please feel free to post them! (They're still new to all of us!)

#17391 I Showed A Man How to Pocket Page Scrapbook While In Hobby Lobby

Posted by Teresa S on 24 June 2015 - 09:22 AM

I stopped by my local Hobby Lobby this weekend and of course had to check out the scrapbook aisles.  A man approached me and asked if I was a scrapbooker and did I have a spare moment to answer a couple of questions.

His son is in an agriculture program where he is working across the mid-west farming and harvesting crops.  He has been sending his Dad pictures and texts of what he is doing.  He showed me a few pictures that were both horizontally and vertically taken and he wanted to make an album of those pictures and texts to give his son once he came back home.

So I thought pocket page scrapbooking would be the best option for him and he agreed.  We found him a package of pocket pages that contained basic vertical and horizontal layouts, a D-Ring album with a map of the United States on the cover.  As for the pocket page cards, he would be hard pressed to find agriculture ones so I found some travel ones that were in browns, blues and greens that would work well the colors in his photographs.

He was happy and I was happy to have helped him learn to pocket page scrapbook!

#9383 Noell & Izzy - you guys make it look easy!

Posted by anandi on 18 August 2014 - 08:27 PM

I just wanted to give Noell and Izzy a HUGE thank you and kudos for your excellent podcast.

I thought I'd branch out a bit while waiting for the new PRT and downloaded a couple of new (non-scrappy) podcasts, and man was the difference in quality evident. Hosts constantly interrupting the guest, lots of background noise, verbal tics.  O.M.G. it was painful.  You guys should give podcast lessons :)

So yeah, thanks again for a professional, entertaining, awesome podcast.  I guess I will just start working my way through the archives instead :D

#4 Welcome!

I should mention -- Izzy has worked on this forum/gallery non-stop since we rolled into town on Wednesday, all the way through last night near bedtime!

#14640 What do you want?

Posted by Scrapnsee on 08 February 2015 - 06:30 AM

I've seen a reaction lately to perfect, Stepfordish lives. True memory keepers want to reflect real lives. Although, I suppose, we have gotten spoiled with the manufactured Project LIfe-type cards and should be making our own, because in a truly perfect life, we'd use our stash. ;) )

Amen.  Scrapbook lines can be beautiful, but they are SO stereotypical - as many of the comments point out.  Travel? Must be Paris. Fall? Must be Halloween. Life? Must be awesome.  Sometimes fall is about loss. Sometimes travel is about India. Sometimes life just absolutely sucks.  It's like we're not allowed to scrap these parts in a way that is supported by the products we can choose. Sure, we can make our own w/letter stickers and Cameo cuts etc. But wouldn't it be nice for scrapbook companies to stop whining about a shrinking market when they are the ones who insist on yet another pink-themed "life is awesome" flower-filled paper pad, to a market that's somewhat tapped out of the need for pink-themed "life is awesome" flower-filled paper pads?

#3871 Ideas To Help Izzy And Noell Keep This Going?

Posted by stacyj on 08 July 2014 - 01:29 PM

I've asked our BPC marketing team to see what we can do to support this new forum adventure at Paperclipping. We are anxious to see this forum be successful! And as some of you have already mentioned, use the paperclipping/bigpicture affiliate link to register for BPC classes -- this directly supports what Noell and Izzy are doing here and on the Roundtable. If you're taking a class at BPC, talk about it here --- I'm going to *try* and pop in once a day, and be more accessible, so we can answer questions you have about classes. The more we talk about and promote what we use and find useful in our industry, the more good we will do in terms of keeping these resources available and strong. Great question!

#14641 What do you want?

Posted by Melissa on 08 February 2015 - 07:42 AM

I would like letter sticker sets to contain more of the letters I use more often and less of the letters that never get used. I love scrapbooking so much, but when I'm searching through letter stickers to find letters for a title, and I simply can't make it work because I have no E's left in ANY set, I get frustrated.

#9075 A first for me...scrapping for pay?

Posted by Noell on 14 August 2014 - 11:35 AM

I've always told people I don't scrapbook for others. You said above that your estimated amount covers just over your cost. If that's all you charge then you're not getting paid for your time, nor your skill -- and skilled work should be valued.

Posted by Izzy on 17 April 2015 - 09:15 AM

Just a heads up...

We've started working on something new from Paperclipping.

I'm not saying what it is yet, but I will say that if you like The Paperclipping Roundtable, we think you'll love this new thing.

And it's coming soon. Very soon. :)

We've already started the production phase.

#156 Uncooperative Subjects

Posted by Izzy on 27 June 2014 - 11:33 AM

My personal situation is different, because my whole family is accustomed to having cameras around. They don't give me a hard time about photos anymore.

In fact, a lot of the time, they don't even notice that I have a camera.

Here are a few things that I think might help:

* Keep at it. Your subjects will likely become more cooperative over time as they realize that you're serious about documenting your life.

* Show them the photos they look amazing in. Tell them how photogenic they are.

* (Related to the above) Don't publicly post photos where they just woke up/don't have makeup on/etc. If I want my subject to be okay with me shooting photos of them, they have to trust that I have their interest in mind too. :)

* Take photos without them knowing. Candid photos can be packed full of story.

* Take lots of photos. My experience is that I took a lot more photos when I first got started. Over time you can take less, but at the beginning, quantity really helps give you options.

* Don't ask someone to smile for a photo (and don't ask them to "Say Cheese").

* Get in the photo with them for a selfie. They might feel more comfortable if they aren't alone in the photo.

* Take their picture with someone else. Again they might feel more comfortable with another person.

* Take their picture with a pet. Same reason as above.

* Ask them to make a goofy face sometimes. If they have fun taking photos with you, they'll love it more. Also, it might get it out of their system.

* Keep shooting a bunch of photos. You can capture them making the face, then after they make the face, etc. "Burst Mode" is your friend. If you can hold down the shutter release and snap a bunch of photos one after the other, you increase your chances of getting a great shot.

* Take a photo of them doing something other than posing. For example, they might love you taking photos of them dancing, or playing tennis, or whatever it is they love to do (or are doing at the time). They'll be distracted and not thinking about the camera.

* Let them take revenge by shooting photos of you. :)

* Have low expectations. Don't put too much pressure on yourself. Be patient and be "pleasantly surprised" when you get a great photo.

* Give the process time. As I mentioned before -- people can get comfortable with cameras over time. But initially it might be awkward and frustrating. The awkward period will likely pass.

Just a few ideas I hope might help.

#14660 What do you want?

Posted by Tiffany W on 08 February 2015 - 05:52 PM

I am so tired of word phrases that say "Best Day Ever". I think it should be used rarely as best is for THE best. And best doesn't happen every single freaking day.

I would love letter stickers that include more vowels.

#1450 Schmo?

Posted by Izzy on 30 June 2014 - 08:38 PM

vdoyle8 - Once upon a time someone in the audience made that up, saying they weren't a schmo because they were a Paperclipping Member (meaning they subscribe to my video tutorials), and people thought it was hilarious and have continued the joke. But Izzy and I don't really think of anyone as schmos. Everyone is welcome here, with or without memberships!  :)

Even though it was fun and we joked about it when it first came up, personally I'm a little uncomfortable with the schmo/non-schmo thing because it's a little too "us vs. them". The reality is that everyone is a non-schmo if they're part of our audience. We love everyone! Everyone is welcome!

(Singing "Everything is Awesome!" in my head now...) ;)

I love english but my family doesn't understand it and really don't like when I use english words, so I also stick with french. Not easy when you see these beautiful Ali Edwards stamps!!

About stamping: the recent trend of pocket cards is a nice way to use stamping on a layout, because you can experiment your stamping on this smaller size and use it only uf you like it. Plus, there are so many pretty pockets cards that are easy to copy with your stamps!

I used stamps on most of these cards.

But I also have a hard time to use stamps on my layouts. I noticed that I used them more when I make my embellishments ahead, because then I do use my stamps to make DIY embellishments! Like the pocket cards. :)
